According to the Public Affairs Index-2020 report that was released on Friday by the Public Affairs Centre, Kerala (1.389) was adjudged as the best-governed state in the country, while Uttar Pradesh was listed at the bottom in the large States category. Public Affairs Centre is a Bengaluru-based not-for-profit organization headed by the former Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Chairman K.Kasturirangan.
The Public Affairs Index-2020 report evaluated governance in States and Union Territories based on three criteria of sustainable development: Equity, Growth and Sustainability. This put Tamil Nadu (0.912) on the second and Andhra Pradesh (0.531) on the third spot among the large states. Right above Uttar Pradesh(-1.462), we have Odisha (-1.202) and Bihar (-1.159) to have finished in the lower strata of the report.
The best-governed state in the small state category was adjudged to Goa (1.746) and in Union Territories it was adjudged to Chandigarh(1.058). The top three in the small state category with Goa are Meghalaya (0.797) and Himachal Pradesh(0.725), while the bottom three are Manipur(-364), Delhi (-0.29) and Uttarakhand (-0.278). Dadra & Nagar Haveli (-0.691) is at the bottom of Union Territories category.
K Kasturirangan said, “The evidence that PAI 2020 generates and the insights that it provides must compel us to reflect on the economic and social transition that is underway in India.”
