When we think of Japan, what’s the first thing that comes to our mind? Toyota, Honda, Canon, animes etc. The economy in Japan is highly developed and is the world’s second-largest developed country. But did you know? In-country like Japan, loneliness is a serious social issue. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development say that Japan is probably the loneliest nation worldwide.
As a solution to this problem, there is a service that allows people to rent a family and that service is called Rental Family Service. This service helps the clients by providing professional actors and actresses who act like their friends, family members and colleagues for social events like wedding and sometimes as a platonic companionship too. The cost to rent is around $50 an hour. The motto of this service is to fill the voids in people’s lives by helping them to get through the hard and challenging phases of life.
In 2018, Conan O’Brien an American television host and comedian rented a family in Japan which drew attention to netizens and this social issue was publicized.
Once Mother Teresa said, Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty. At some point in our lives, we would have felt lonely. I believe as social animals we must participate in social relationships to feel alive. Now let’s take moment and be grateful to have a friend, family, classmate or colleague.
